Scripture – “And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”
Romans 13:11 NIV
Observation – Paul is telling followers of Jesus to wake up because our salvation is nearer now than when we first gave or lives to Jesus. He tells us in Romans 13:12-14 what “waking up” means, “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Application – If you are a Christian man Paul is calling you to wake up. How are you spending your time and money? How do you speak to people? Are you looking at women with lust or are you clothing yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you putting the needs of your clients ahead of your own or are you only interested in making more money in order to “feed your family?” Are you talking about people behind their back? Are you spending time reading God’s word, witnessing to others and making disciples. Are you giving full vent to your anger or keeping yourself under control? Wake up men! Christian women, are you wearing booty shorts and sports bras when you walk down the street or into a store? Wake up, you know this is ridiculous but you have let the world tell you how to dress. Tonight is Halloween, are you going to dress up and look like a prostitute for one night to “have fun”. Wake up and honor your husband and honor Christ in how you dress. Are you gossiping about others? Are you complaining instead of praising God for his goodness? Wake up and clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, I pray for all of us that call you our Lord. I pray that we would wake up and honor you so that the world doesn’t think we belong to it.
