Scripture – “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
Proverbs 31:25 NIV
Observation – The woman described in this chapter is clothed with strength and dignity because of how she lives her life; she works hard, fears God, respects her husband, she cares for her family, her employees and the poor. She prepares for the future through proper planning and investments and when she speaks they are words of wisdom and instruction. As a result she looks forward to the future and can laugh at days to come because she is ready for them. This woman is living a holy life so she isn’t looking back on her past with regret.
Application – Wouldn’t you love for God and others to describe you as being clothed with strength and dignity and being so confident and prepared that you can laugh at days to come. When a standard is set this high it can feel intimidating or impossible to achieve. A good starting point to build this type of life is to confess to God where you are falling short and ask him to forgive you and show you how to improve. It is important to identify what situations you are most vulnerable to live a weak and undignified life. One of this woman’s qualities is she does not eat the bread of idleness, in other words she isn’t lazy. If you are suffering from laziness that is certainly a weak and undignified character trait. How can you fix it? Confess it to God and then force yourself, as verse 15 says, to “get up while it is still dark.” This is not easy but neither is being weak and undignified. Philippians 4:13 encourages us with the fact that, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Jesus wants to help you become the person he designed you to be and you long to be.
Prayer – Lord, we all have multiple areas in our life where we are not strong and dignified. I pray that you would step in and confront us so that we can get on a righteous path and begin walking with you everyday. The person that walks with you can laugh at the days to come because they are under the control of the Holy Spirit and they know that you will never leave them or forsake them. Amen
