Scripture – “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
Proverbs 22:1 NIV
Observation – God says that living an honorable life is better than getting rich.
Application – From your perspective, do you think the world believes this? As you go through your day, do you more often see people behaving in a way that demonstrates that their reputation is more valuable to them, or that money is more important. Money has this hold on people that makes them think if they just had a little more life would be fine and they wouldn’t have to worry or strive anymore. We spend an inordinate amount of our time and effort pursuing financial freedom. Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteous, and all these things will be given to you as well.” God says that if we focus on serving him and doing what is right we’ll have a good name and he’ll provide for us. If our focus is on loving money instead of loving God and loving people we might have a big house, a country club membership and new cars but will not be esteemed by God or people.
Prayer – Lord, I pray for those of us who like to earn money, that it would be our servant and not our master so that when you think of us you smile. Amen.
