Scripture – “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.”
Proverbs 7:1-2 NIV
Observation – God is telling us that his commands should be obeyed and memorized. He says that if we keep his commands (obey them) we will have a rich life. They are so important that we should guard them as the apple of our eye.
Application – God says in Deuteronomy 32:9-10 “For the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance. In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,”. God says that his people are the apple of his eye, he values and cherishes us above everything else in his creation. In Proverbs 7 he used the idiom, guard my teachings as “the apple of your eye”. God’s word is so critical for us to live lives that honor God. If we just glance at his word from time to time we are going to get back what we put into it and live a life of frustration, strife and disappointment. Jesus says that he came that we may have life and have it to the full. There is no way to experience this type of life if God’s word is not prioritized in your daily life.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, thank you for preserving your word so that we can read it, discuss it, hide it in our hearts and live our lives based on it. Amen.
