Scripture – “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:5-9 NIV
Observation – God is perfect and if we claim to know him and love him yet we walk in darkness we are liars and do not live out the truth. If we walk in his light, the truth, we have fellowship with other believers and the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Application – If we want to walk with God we need to intentionally obey his commands and stay close to him all day. When you walk there are many choices you have to make, do I turn to the left, do I turn to the right or do I keep going straight? How do you know which way to go? God’s word instructs us in the way we should go but we don’t always make the right choices because of fear, greed, laziness, lack of knowledge or lack of trust in Jesus. When we do turn the wrong way, which is sin, we need to confess it quickly so that God will forgive us and purify us so that we can get on the right path. If a person claims they know God yet doesn’t read his word he will end up so far from the right path it may seem impossible to find his way back, but it isn’t impossible. God leaves the 99 and goes after the one.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, thank you that you invite us to walk with you today and that when we sin you forgive us, purify us and restore us. Amen.
