Scripture – “So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.””
Genesis 13:8-9 NIV
Observation – God had blessed Abram and Lot so much that the land they were sharing became too crowded. Abram approached Lot and said, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”
Application – If you were in a class learning how to negotiate this would be a prime example of what not to do. Abram was older and had brought Lot along with him when he left Haran so Abram had leverage. Instead of negotiating for what Abram thought would be best for him and his family he let Lot choose. Abram trusted God so much that he knew God would take care of him so he felt no pressure to “work a deal”. The purpose of this is not to dissuade you from negotiating. The purpose is to trust that God is guiding your steps because he loves you and has a plan for your life. See Proverbs 16:9 and Jeremiah 29:11-13.
Prayer – Dear Jesus, thank you that you care for us and provide for us so that we can serve you without fear of missing out. Amen.
