Scripture – “They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.””
Genesis 11:3-4 NIV
Observation – The people living in Babel wanted to building a city for themselves so that they could make a name for themselves. God was not in the picture.
Application – We are all citizens of a kingdom or kingdoms. Most people are concerned about their own kingdom and want to make a name for themselves. Others, the few, are loyal subjects of God’s kingdom and seek first his kingdom and his righteous. Most people, that call themselves Christians, live like they have dual citizenship. They are traveling back and forth between God’s kingdom and their kingdom and it is wearing them out and causing a great deal of stress. Jesus is clear, “No one can serve two masters, you will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other, you cannot serve both God and money.” Which one are you?
Prayer – Lord God, help us to rejoice that we have the privilege of being called to serve in your great kingdom. Don’t let us settle for a small inferior temporary “kingdom” that leads to sorrow and regret. Amen.
