Scripture – “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.””
Genesis 1:28 NIV
Observation – In the beginning God blessed people and instructed them to have children. Based on the words “increase in number; fill the earth” I don’t think he was referring to a small family, just enough to replace you.
Application – It is common for young people to say they don’t want to bring children into this world. A few of them may actually mean this but the majority are self-centered and want to use the money they earn to travel, buy cool stuff and spend their free time doing whatever they want. You may be thinking, “How dare you! How do you know how young people think?” Here is why, almost everyone is selfish and almost everyone wants to do what they want, they think the universe revolves around them. God told Jeremiah In Jeremiah 29:6 to instruct the Israelites that were taken captive to Babylon, “Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.” If God wanted people that were captured by a foreign nation and forced to live there for 70 years to get married and have children he wants you to get married and have children. I’ve never met anyone who had a big family say, “I wish I had fewer children”. I have heard of people who focused their lives on “getting ahead” that regret not having a family or getting started too late.
Prayer – Lord, you are the same yesterday, today and forever, you commanded us in the beginning to be fruitful and multiply and that command and blessing is true today. Thank you for the incredible gift of having children.
