Scripture – “The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.”
Proverbs 15:2 NIV
Observation – To adorn something means to make it more beautiful or attractive by adding decorative elements, accessories, or ornaments to it. If you are wise your words make knowledge more attractive to people so they are drawn to it. In contrast the foolish person continually says things that make no sense.
Application – We have all been the fool whose mouth gushes out folly. It may have been when we were trying to impress someone or offering our opinion on a matter on which we are not well versed. Often times folly gushes out of our mouths when we are trying to be funny or clever. The majority of the time we say foolish things is when we are thinking about ourselves instead of God and others. When we listen carefully to what God says and what others say and weigh our answers carefully our tongue will adorn knowledge and God will be glorified.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for teaching us these things so we can move from saying foolish things to wise things and benefit those around us and please you. Amen.
