Scripture – “At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.””
Proverbs 5:11-14 NIV
Observation – In 54 words God paints a picture of an old man looking back on his life with shame and regret because he wouldn’t listen to the people God put in his life to help him, he thought he had all the answered and scoffed with people told him the right way to live. He had the opportunity to live a good life, a life filled with discipline, sacrifice and love for God, his wife and family but he hated discipline and correction. The verses before 11-14 tell us that he committed adultery because he couldn’t control his desires which led to his life being ruined.
Application – Will your life end in groaning when your flesh and body are spent and you realize that your lack of discipline and unwillingness to listen to people who know the truth about God and life result in you coming to the brink of utter ruin in the assembly of God’s people? If you resemble this verse repent and ask Jesus to forgive you and give you a new heart that delights in holiness, discipline and sacrifice. We can’t do this by ourselves because we are corrupted. We need the creator of the universe to, as Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me”. There is life, after this life, Jesus can give you hope and purpose in the here and now and will welcome you to eat and drink with him in eternity if you respond to his call to repent and give your life to him today. Don’t allow your sinful flesh to ruin your life today and for eternity.
Prayer – Lord, I pray one person is sick and tired of a life directed by sin and asks you to give them a new heart today. Amen.
