Scripture – “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.”
Proverbs 2:1-9 NIV
Observation – If you accept God’s word, store up his commands, turn your ear to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, call out for insight, cry aloud for understanding, look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure THEN you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For God gives wisdom and success to those who are upright. He guards us and protects us and gives us understanding to do what is just and fair – to walk down every good path.
Application – Our expectations determine our behavior. If we truly believe that the Lord gives wisdom and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding and if we believe he holds success in store for the upright, that he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, that he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. If we REALLY believe this then we will accept God’s word, store up his commands, turn our ear to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, call out for insight, cry aloud for understanding, look for it as for silver, and search for it as for hidden treasure. If we knew there was a valuable treasure buried in our back yard, a treasure that would provide generational wealth and allow us to live wherever we chose, support missionaries, give to churches, help the poor and travel the world with no financial constraints we would tear up our backyard because we would know with 100% certainty that our behavior of searching for the treasure would be rewarded. If you really believe that God’s word is more valuable than silver, gold or rubies you will dig into each day knowing with 100% certainty that God is going to give you wisdom that will lead you to the life he designed you to live. A life of purpose, impact and peace.
Prayer – Lord, give us a deep hunger for your word so that our lives reflect a heart that believes that our effort in seeking you will be rewarded by you and to understand that you are our shield and our very great reward. Amen.
