Scripture – “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.””
1 Peter 5:5 NIV
Observation – God calls us to be humble and submissive to one another because God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.
Application – How does this work? If we are followers of Christ and are behaving with a prideful heart does God really place himself in opposition to us? Yes, he does. God is actively against you at that moment because you are rejoicing in your perceived superiority. You have a mindset that you are great and that your greatness is attributable to your intellect, cleverness and hard work. This isn’t a small matter because it has to do with the condition of your heart. You may say, “but I just want to be acknowledged for my contributions”, maybe, but it might be worse than that and if it is you will find yourself in opposition to the creator of the universe and he will humble you if you don’t choose humility. Think about the 6’8” 250 pound athlete that thinks he is great. He didn’t choose to be built like that or have a 44” vertical jump, it was a gift, he should be on his knees everyday thanking God for that body, not pounding his chest all day.
Prayer – Lord, thank you for all the great gifts you have given us to use to love and serve you and others. Amen.
