Scripture – “The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.”
Proverbs 17:27-28 NIV
Observation – Wise, understanding and knowledgeable people use words with restraint and they don’t let circumstances dictate what they say and the manner in which they speak. The opposite is true as well, fools talk too much and can’t control their emotions, but even the fool is thought wise if he remains silent.
Application – Do you feel the need to offer your opinion in every conversation or to drone on when a few words would suffice? If this is you, why do you do it? Do you think everyone needs to know what you know? Are you trying to show how smart you are? Do you love the sound of your own voice? Do you feel the need to defend yourself? This is one of many passages where God warns us about our tongue. Be intentional with your words so that God and others don’t think you are a fool.
Prayer – Lord, help me think before I speak today, amen.
