Scripture – ““Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?””
Matthew 14:29-31 NIV
Observation – Jesus was walking on water and the disciples thought he was a ghost. Peter said, if it is you Lord tell me to come to you, Jesus said, “Come”. Peter got out of the boat and was walking on water but when he saw the wind he was afraid and began to sink. He cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus reached out his hand and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Application – What is your wind? What is causing you fear and anxiety? Can you name it or is it an ever present feeling that something bad is going to happen. Jesus loves you, like he loves Peter (he is not the God of the dead, but of the living) and Jesus is saying the same thing to you that he said to Peter and is asking you the same question that he asked Peter. “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Take some time today and talk to God directly about your fears and why you doubt. We all doubt and it seems to me that Jesus wants to put a stop to it.
Prayer – Jesus, forgive me and everyone else for being such sissies when it comes to our faith. You have been so good to us and yet we focus on the waves of our lives instead of the God who gave himself for us and promises to never leave us or forsake us. Help us to turn our eyes to you today, obey and see that you don’t let us sink. Amen.
