Scripture – ““The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13‬:‭44‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven, living under God’s rule and reign, to a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it he hit it again and then in his JOY went and sold all he had and bought the field.

Application – Can you imagine the anxiety this man felt during the time it took to sell all of his possessions to get enough money to buy the field so he could obtain the treasure. His mind must of been racing with the thought of other people stumbling upon the treasure as he had and taking it. If this occurred he would have sold all he had to buy a field with no treasure. But this isn’t what happened because Jesus is the treasure and his old way of life is “all he had”. When a person truly understands who Jesus is and what he has done for us they are able, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to give what they cannot keep in exchange for being included in the kingdom of heaven, something that they cannot lose. Are you tightly gripping this life with its wealth, worries and pleasures and being pulled by the Holy Spirit or are you gladly selling what you have in exchange for the kingdom of heaven?

Prayer – Lord, this life is important and what we do here matters. Help us to put into perspective every thought, conversation and interaction we have with ourselves, You and others so that we live in a way that demonstrates our understanding of the temporary nature of this life versus the eternal value of living for the next life. Amen.
