Scripture – “An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”

‭‭Titus‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Paul is describing the characteristics required for a church elder. He must be faithful to his wife, his children must be believers, he must be blameless, self-controlled, he can’t be a drunk, a violent person, a liar, greedy and he must be upright, holy and disciplined. Additionally he must know God’s word really well so he can encourage others with the truth of the Bible and refute those who oppose it.

Application – How are you doing? There is no possible way you can live this way in your own strength. You must relent and permit the Holy Spirit to guide you in everything. Fear of man must be replaced with love for God. You must want to please God so much that everything else seems small in comparison.

Prayer – Lord, I pray you take control of my heart driving out all pride, fear and selfishness so I can be used by you. Amen.
