Scripture – “By your hand save me from such people, Lord, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones. As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.”
Psalms 17:14-15 NIV
Observation – My Bible says that David was being persecuted by Saul at this time. David describes the contrast between wicked people and righteous people, those who reject God and those who pursue him. The only rewards wicked people will receive are the rewards of this world; temporary health, temporary wealth and temporary fame. David says that he will receive his ultimate reward after he dies and is “awakened by God” and gets to see God’s face.
Application – I read an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday about the number of older people that are “aging alone”. It said that twelve million five hundred thousand seniors live by themselves. One 65 year old woman describes how she wanted independence so she decided not to have children. She tells about how proud she was that she could do a handstand in yoga and walk 5 miles a day. After a health issue she can no longer do the things she used to be able to do, she regrets not having children and spends most of her time by herself. She enjoyed the rewards of this life for a short amount of time. Fortunately for her she still has time to seek the God who made her. How about you? What rewards are you seeking?
Prayer – Lord God, don’t let us sacrifice what cannot be lost for what cannot be kept. Amen.
