Scripture – “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭13‬:‭2‬, ‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – In verse 2 David is wrestling with his thoughts, in other words, he cannot free his mind from obsessing over what has happened and the fear of what might happen in the near future and because of this his heart is full of sorrow. In verses 5 and 6 he moves his focus from his fears to God’s unfailing love and he rejoices in God’s salvation. This change of mind results in David singing God’s praise and remembering how good God has been to him.

Application – Wresting with your thoughts day after day can rob a person of every ounce of joy they otherwise could have experienced if they could somehow figure out a way to stop the “loop” and focus on the present. David’s solution was to remember all that God had done for him in the past which resulted in him singing and praising God because, in spite of his troubles, David knew he could trust in God’s unfailing love and certain salvation.

Prayer – Lord, it is amazing to me, with as good as you have been to me, that I still worry and wrestle with my thoughts. When fear raises it head help me to trust in your unfailing love and rejoice in your salvation. Amen.
