Scripture – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33 NIV
Observation – Jesus is addressing our priorities while we are here on earth. In the previous verses he is telling us not to make it our life ambition to acquire earthly wealth. Our Father knows we need food and clothes and he promises to provide this for us. Our passion and purpose on this earth is to seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness and then he will provide everything we need.
Application – The reality of living this way is very difficult because we measure everything but how can seeking first his kingdom and his righteousness be calculated? How can a person know if they are pursuing worldly ideals or God’s kingdom. If you are a Christian obedience to God’s commands is a strong indicator of your priorities; are you reading God’s word, praying and spending time with believers? Are you dealing with people honestly? Are you refraining from gossip, bad language and jokes, looking at the opposite sex with lust? Are you generous with the wealth God has entrusted to you? Are you living with joy and hope or are you white knuckling your life with worry? Have you accepted God’s forgiveness and to you desire to extend forgiveness to others.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, your ways are better than ours. I pray for believers that they would commit themselves to seeking first your kingdom and your righteousness and would experience your faithfulness.
