Scripture – “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””
John 8:12 NIV
Observation – Jesus is claiming that he is the light of the world. He is stating that there is a good way to live this life and a bad way. The good way is through Jesus’ teachings, repentance and a relationship with him. The bad way is that you become your own God and trust in yourself or you trust in a false God. The light of Christ shows us who we truly are; people who believe there is right and wrong in this world yet, even with this knowledge and agreement that some things are good and some things are bad, we choose the bad. This occurs because we are sinners that need a savior. We need the light of the world, Jesus, to light us up, so we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin.
Application – Repent of your sin and allow the light of Jesus to illuminate every area of your life and remove the darkness of sin. If you are a Christian and there is an area of your life that seems dark, ask the Creator of the universe to shine the light of his truth in that area so you know which way to walk.
Prayer – Jesus, thank you for stating that we will never walk in darkness. Give us confidence to come into your presence and ask you to illuminate our lives so we can escape the darkness and walk with you, the light of the world. Amen.
