Scripture – “A sluggard says, “There’s a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!” As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed. A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven people who answer discreetly.”
Proverbs 26:13-16 NIV
Observation – The four verses above describe a lazy person as one who makes excuses, sleeps in and can’t finish what he started. We are all in agreement with these three characteristics but God adds a fourth; the sluggard also thinks he is smarter than everyone else.
Application – We all know that lazy people make excuses, sleep when they should be working and their lives are full of unfinished projects, but why does God include, “A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven people who answer discreetly.”? The sluggard is too lazy to do the hard work of seeking out wise counsel, praying and waiting for the right direction based on research. They think they are wise and are too lazy to go through the process to determine if they are correct so they make quick uniformed decisions that result in pain.
Prayer – Lord God, when we are in a hurry and don’t want to listen to wise counsel help us take a Sacred Pace in our decision making by praying, seeking wise counsel, looking for supporting circumstances and getting neutral until we clearly hear from you.
