Scripture – “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and to insight, “You are my relative.” They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭7‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – The first 5 verses of Proverbs 7 is the introduction of a story about a young man that gets seduced by a married woman whose husband is out of town. He falls victim and commits adultery. God instructs us to say to wisdom you are my sister and to insight you are my relative because they will keep you from sinning in this way.

Application – When lust, anger or greed override your morality you are in trouble if you haven’t committed yourself to living a holy life and embracing God’s ways over your temporary feelings. All of us are going to experience strong emotions and acting on them in the moment feels like the right thing to do. Wisdom instructs us to honor God, not succumb to our fleeting desires, understanding moves us past the event to a place where we can see clearly and thank God that he rescued us from years of remorse and regret. Store up wisdom and understanding in your heart today so when temptation knocks on your door you double lock it instead of opening it and listening to its presentation.

Prayer – Lord, we live a world that is both beautiful and dangerous. I pray that all believers would be focused on you and living a holy life that brings you joy so they can avoid making a décision that ruins their lives. Amen.
