Scripture – ““You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.”
Matthew 23:33-34 NIV
Observation – Jesus is speaking to the teachers of the law and the Pharisees and criticizing them for looking good on the outside but having a hard heart toward God and their fellow man. He tells them that he is sending prophets, wise men and teachers to tell them the truth about God and repentance, but instead of humbling themselves they will kill God’s messengers for telling them the truth.
Application – Who has God sent to tell you the truth about your sin and God’s plan of salvation for you? Did you accept their message or did you roll your eyes and scoff at them? Are you a humble repentant servant of Jesus or a proud Pharisee that will be condemned to hell?
Prayer – Lord, I pray for all of the “religious” people out there that think they are good with you because they go to church, sing in the choir and volunteer. I pray their hope would be in your death and resurrection and a personal relationship with you, not a list of good things they have done. Amen.
