Scripture – “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.”

‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭5‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – If you love money, not appreciate it or value it, but love it, you will never be satisfied with your income. God says that possessions are only good for feasting our eyes on them and that rich people’s wealth cause them to worry rather than providing them with peace.

Application – We all need money and possessions. God is making a distinction between what we need for life and what we want to make us feel important in this life. We all need a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, a car to drive, a refrigerator, a lawn mower, etc. If the accumulation of things is causing you to invest your time caring for them or “feasting your eyes” on them maybe you need to reevaluate their place in your life. If your possessions and riches are causing you to worry or if they are becoming your source of security repent and turn back to Jesus.

Prayer – Lord, you have made it clear that we can’t serve you and money. I pray for everyone who loves you but is struggling in this area, that you help them to use their wealth for your kingdom. Amen.
