Scripture – ““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?””

‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭36‬-‭37‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Earlier in Acts 2 the disciples receive the gift of the Holy Spirit just as Jesus promised they would in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…” Through the power of the Holy Spirit Peter stands up and proclaims to the people that they are responsible for Jesus’ death. This is the same Peter that, 50 days earlier, denied knowing Jesus three times in a row.

Application – Where does your power come from? Is it your position, your intellect, your self-confidence? Does your power come from your wealth, your past success or your discipline? These are all good things that God has blessed us with in order to glorify him and build his kingdom but they are nothing in comparison to the power of the Holy Spirit. How do we access this power? We trust and obey. When God calls us to do something we do it and then watch how he works. What most of us do is obey the easy things where there is no risk but when it comes to more difficult commands we decide to consult ourselves, our cleverness and we begin to play out a cost benefit analysis and base our decision on what we think is the most probable outcome, according to us. The Holy Spirit is left on the sidelines while we command our days. If you want to see the power of the Holy Spirit in your life start doing things the Lord commands and don’t worry about the results, the results are up to God, not you.

Prayer – Lord, we come before you today and confess that we don’t obey and trust you like we should. Give us humble hearts to acknowledge that your ways are higher than our ways and when give us a command help us to “just do it” in the power of the Holy Spirit.
