Scripture – “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.””
John 6:26-27 NIV
Observation – Jesus told the people who had crossed over the lake to find him that they were looking for him because he fed them. He instructs them not to work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life, which he says he will give them.
Application – Are you following Jesus only for the earthy benefits of being associated with him. His word is truth, if a person puts into practice Jesus’ teaching their life will be substantially better. If you are in business and you treat your clients like you want to be treated lots of people will hear of your good reputation and want to business with you. Is that why you are following Jesus? To get more clients? I think you will be more successful in all your pursuits by obeying Jesus but he tells us that we should be working for food that endures to eternal life. What does that mean? Jesus himself is the bread of life. Knowing him and receiving him is our reward. The closet comparison of this relationship is with your parents, spouse or kids. When I hear people talking about their family and why they love them they don’t tell me about all the things they get from them. They talk about their character and what is true about them and joyful about knowing them. I think where we can stumble in our relationship with Jesus is that he is everything and he gives us everything. As a result we can often times look at what he gives us, on this earth, and the gifts become the focus and not the giver.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, you are good good God! Thank you for everything you do for us. I pray for every believer that they would work for food that endures to eternal life by enjoying knowing you. Amen.
