Scripture – “While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭20‬:‭45‬-‭47‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Jesus warned his disciples about the teachers of the law who sought the approval of man and whose objective was to be honored by men. Jesus said that these people will be punished most severely because they were using religion to elevate themselves and not God.

Application – Anytime we read about Jesus criticizing the teachers of the law, Pharisees or elders we should ask ourselves, “How are we like them?” Do you talk about your prayer life, your giving, how much you read the Bible, your witnessing and your time volunteering to impress people? If so, is God’s pleasure not enough for you?

Prayer – Lord, let our lives be offerings to you. Anytime we begin to feel just a little pride creeping into our hearts let us repent and thank you for allowing us to serve you and love others. Amen.
