Scripture – “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.””
John 10:27-30 NIV
Observation – Jesus is speaking to the Jewish leaders and tells them that his sheep listen to his voice and follow him. He gives them eternal life and they shall never perish and no one will snatch them from his hand or the Father’s hand. He goes on to say that he and the Father are one. Jesus isn’t speaking as a prophet in these verses pointing people to God, he is speaking as God pointing people to himself. Jesus gives eternal life, no one snatches people from his hand. He and the Father are one.
Application – Jesus is claiming he is the way to God, because he is God. Through faith in Christ we can receive eternal life, he gives it, we don’t earn it, and once we have eternal life it cannot be taken from us. This is why we are on earth. We spend lots of time doing lots of things that aren’t eternal. We know we are going to die and should be focused on what happens next.
Prayer – Jesus, thank you for making a way for us to go to heaven. Thank you for loving us even though we have turned our backs on you. Amen.
