Scripture – “Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.” Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.” Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.” Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.””
Nehemiah 4:10-14 NIV
Observation – In verses 10-11 the people are losing heart. They are tired, the work to be done seems impossible and their enemies are seeking to take their lives. Nehemiah’s response is to give people specific jobs and equip them with weapons. He then reminds them that God is great and awesome and encourages each person to fight for their families and their homes.
Application – When a job or situation seems too big for you, break the work down into specific tasks that need to be completed in order to make progress. Gather the resources you need to do the work and remember that God loves and cares for you. He will be with you as you seek to complete the work. Encourage yourself by focusing on the benefits of completing the work and the negatives consequences of leaving it undone. When we are tired and afraid it is very difficult to think clearly. Stop, pray and gather yourself and come up with a step by step plan that can be executed and remember that God is great and awesome. Nothing is impossible with God.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, we are going to face things today that will bring discouragement and fear. Help us to keep our eyes focused on you and your power and give us energy and enthusiasm to get to work. Amen.
