Scripture – “He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
2 Timothy 1:9-10 NIV
Observation – Paul is writing to Timothy and reminding him that God saved us and called us to live a holy life, not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. Paul goes on to tell Timothy, and us, that this grace was given to us through Jesus, before the beginning of time and revealed through Jesus coming down from heaven, dying on a cross and rising from the dead.
Application – God has called you to live a holy life, not get by until he comes back. He wants you to live a victorious life through the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives in us! Paul encourages us that we already have eternal life and can live with complete confidence in this world because our place in heaven is secure. The death and resurrection of Christ is the central message throughout the New Testament. Outside of the Gospels, scholars estimate that the death and resurrection of Jesus is referenced between 175-200 times. Without it we are dead and our sins and without hope in this world. With it we have eternal life and are safe and secure in our Savior’s hands.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, thank you for dying and coming back from the dead and thank you for saving us by grace. Amen.
