Scripture – “He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success. But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.”

‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭26‬:‭5‬, ‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Uzziah sought God when he was young and God blessed him when Uzziah had Zechariah as a mentor and advisor. But after God blessed him and he became powerful his pride led to his downfall.

Application- How does this happen? Why do people seek God and then when God answers their prayers and blesses them they turn their back on him? God says the human heart is deceitful and beyond cure. Could it be that people really don’t love God but are using God to get what they want in life, which is independence, power and wealth, and when they get it they “don’t need” God anymore? This is reminiscent of the young medical student that marries his high school sweetheart. She works, cooks, cleans and attends to all of his needs while he is in medical school and when he becomes a doctor and starts making money he divorces her and marries someone that he thinks is better. Do you really love God or are you seeking him so you can get what you want? When you receive his blessings will you get closer to God or declare your independence?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, you are good all the time, thank you for all of your incredible blessings. I pray that your followers would love you for you and not for your gifts. I pray that when you pour out your blessings that people would pour out praise to you and would remember their first love. Amen.
