Scripture – “And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.”
1 John 3:23 NIV
Observation – John is telling us what Jesus told us in Matthew 22:37-40 “Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.””
Application – Walking with Jesus is not a one minute devotion and then you are on your way for the day. Set time aside to inspect your life and identify the areas where you are loving God and where you need to repent and do better. We are commanded to love others as we love ourselves. How are you doing loving yourself? What does your self talk sound like? Are you eating well, exercising and taking time to spend with people you love? If we aren’t loving ourselves well we are not going to be able to love others well.
Prayer – Jesus, you are good and your love endures forever. I pray for people that feel distant from you. I pray they would reach out for you because you aren’t far from anyone of us. I also pray for people that aren’t treating themselves well. I pray that they would love themselves so that they can enjoy this life you have given us and so they are freed up to love others.
