Scripture – “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 3:10-13 NIV
Observation – Just like the flood came and destroyed the earth in the days of Noah the day of the Lord, judgement day, will come upon us suddenly. The earth and everything in it will be destroyed by fire and God will create a new heaven and a new earth where everything is good. Peter asks us, since everything will be destroyed this way, what kind of people ought you be? You ought to live holy and godly lives. Proverbs 11:4 says, “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”
Application – We know with 100% certainty that we are going to die and that Jesus will come back and judge the living and the dead, “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.”
John 5:28-29 NIV. Since this is true we should like holy and godly lives because we know that wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, we brought nothing into this world and we’ll take nothing out of but we know that God is pleased with the person who lives for righteousness.
Prayer – Lord, these verses are terrifying for the person who doesn’t know you but awesome for the one who has accepted your free gift of eternal life through faith in you. I pray for the lost, that you open their eyes so they can see you from your perspective. Amen.
