Scripture – ““Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.””
Psalms 77:7-12 NIV
Observation – The writer feels hopeless. He is nearly convinced that God doesn’t care for him and that God is so angry that he is no longer compassionate. He then changes his focus from his current circumstances and his fatalistic thoughts of his future to what he absolutely knows is true about God. He recalls the years when God held him up with his righteous right hand, he remembers God’s miracles and he makes a choice to meditate on all of God’s mighty deeds.
Application – When life does not follow the path we planned and it feels as if God has forgotten us or is disciplining us, our minds can drift to a dark place where faith, hope, and love feel distant. The psalmist shows us what to do in that moment. He does not deny his pain, but he refuses to let his feelings define what is true about God. Instead, he deliberately remembers.
So when those thoughts come—and they will—appeal to what you know is true. Remember the years when God carried you with his righteous right hand. Remember the prayers he answered, the times he lifted you out of the pit and set your feet on solid ground. Remember the songs of praise he has already put in your mouth.
Take those anxious and discouraging thoughts captive and bring them back under the truth of who God has always proven himself to be. Trouble may linger for a season, but it will not last forever. In his time, he will again lead you into a spacious place. Until then, remain faithful, wait patiently, and endure with confidence in the deliverance of your God. Be faithful and patiently wait with great endurance for the deliverance of your God.
Prayer – Lord, life is very difficult when it feels you are far off or not listening. We know that this isn’t true but it feels bleak. Help us to live every day by faith not by sight. Amen.
