Scripture – “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.”
Proverbs 18:10-11 NIV
Observation – God says that his name is a fortified tower; the righteous trust in God and believe he will take care of them. The wealthy trust in their riches, believing their money will protect them and secure their future. One refuge is real and unshakable, the other is imagined and temporary.
Application – The question is not whether we have money, but whether money has us. It is easy to say we trust God, yet run first to our bank account, our job, or our investments when fear rises. Wealth can give comfort, but it cannot give ultimate security. Markets fluctuate, deals fall apart, tenants leave, and circumstances change overnight. God alone is a refuge that never moves. The righteous “run” to Him—this implies urgency and dependence. When uncertainty comes, do you instinctively run to prayer or to your financial statements? Money is a useful tool, but a dangerous savior. It promises safety but cannot deliver peace. True safety is found not in what we possess, but in who we trust.
Prayer – Lord, give us hearts that realize You are our refuge and strength, not the size of our bank account. Help us to run to You first in every circumstance and to hold our resources loosely, trusting fully in You. Amen.
