Scripture – ““Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.””
Luke 15:8-10 NIV
Observation – Jesus is comparing a woman looking for a valuable coin to God searching for a lost soul. When the coin is found the woman rejoices with her friends and neighbors, when a sinner repents and accepts Jesus there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God in Heaven.
Application – Scripture gives us glimpses of heaven’s joy at key moments in God’s redemptive story. In Job, the angels shout for joy at creation. In Revelation, heaven rejoices over God’s final victory, His righteous judgment, and the wedding of the Lamb and His Church. These celebrations mark the beginning of creation and the culmination of this age. Yet in between these monumental events, Jesus tells us that heaven erupts in celebration over one sinner who repents. In Luke 15, twice, Jesus emphasizes that all of heaven rejoices when a single lost person is found. This reveals what God values most in this present age, redeemed lives. If the repentance of one person causes joy in heaven, then helping people come to know Jesus should be a central priority in our lives. We invest time in many good and worthwhile pursuits, but few things carry eternal significance like pointing someone to Christ. When we pray for the lost, share the gospel, and live as faithful witnesses, we participate in the very work that causes heaven to celebrate.
Prayer – Lord, we want to invest our time and energy in things that cause heaven to rejoice. Give us a deep love for lost people and help us to remember that our life is like a vapor, we’ll be standing in front of you very soon.
