Scripture – “Obed-Edom also had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sakar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh and Peullethai the eighth. (For God had blessed Obed-Edom.)”
1 Chronicles 26:4-5 NIV
Observation – These verses list the names of Obed Edom’s eight sons and ends with “For God had blessed Obed-Edom”. Psalm 127:3-5 says, “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.”
Application – How do you view children? A friend of mine just told me that she and her husband are going to have their fourth child. The most common response from her friends was negative, as if her life was over. Children are a lot of work and to be a good parent you must die to yourself and become a servant to your family. Isn’t this the entire point of following Jesus? To lay down your life?
Prayer – Lord, remind us of why we are here. Help us to lay down our lives so we can experience the joy and get a glimpse of why you made us. Amen.
