Scripture – “Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “ ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’ ””
Luke 13:6-9 NIV
Observation – A man owned a vineyard, one day he went to look for fruit on one of his fig trees. It wasn’t producing fruit so he instructed his servant to cut it down because it was taking up valuable space and resources. The servant said, give it one more year, I’ll dig around it and fertilize it and if it doesn’t bear fruit next year then we can cut it down.
Application – I spoke with a wealth advisor yesterday who has been helping clients for over 40 years. He said it was very rare that his clients gave money to help others. He said they were primarily concerned about providing and maintaining a certain level of lifestyle for themselves. God says he has saved you to go and do good works that he has prepared in advance for you to do. Could you be in danger of being cut down because you are enjoying God’s blessings and doing very little for him?
Prayer – Lord Jesus, help us to trust you, that you are going to take great care of us so that we are freed up to love you and love others with our time, skills and resources. Amen.
