Scripture
“When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.”
Acts 18:5 (NIV)
Observation
Prior to this moment, Paul was making tents to support himself while also sharing the Gospel. This verse marks a shift—when Silas and Timothy arrived, Paul was able to devote himself fully to preaching and proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah.
Application
This is a helpful model for young people who desire to enter ministry. Like Paul, most of us are called to work and provide for ourselves and our families, and we are also called to tell others about Jesus. These callings are not in competition with one another.
In fact, one of the best places to share the Gospel is at work. We spend a significant portion of our lives with coworkers, which gives us opportunities not only to speak about Jesus, but to reflect Him through our conduct—how we respond to deadlines, disappointments, pressure, and direction from authority. Just like Paul, we can faithfully work and faithfully witness at the same time.
Prayer
Lord, I pray for young people who feel called into ministry. Give them wisdom and clarity to discern where You want them to serve in this world. Amen.
