Scripture – ““No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.””
Luke 8:16-18 NIV
Observation – Jesus is comparing our willingness to identify with him and share the gospel to a person who lights a lamp. The purpose of a lamp is to give light to a room so that all who come in can see. The purpose of a follower of Jesus is to be a light for those who don’t know Jesus so they can see Jesus. A concealed faith is like a hidden lamp, it doesn’t fulfill the purpose for which it has been created. Jesus tells us to consider carefully how we listen to his words, because if we are just listening to improve our life whatever we think we have will be taken from us, if we are listening so that we can help others, God will give us more than what we have now because we have been faithful.
Application – If you know Jesus and you know people who don’t know Jesus it is your responsibility to pray for their salvation and share the gospel with them. If you are afraid to do this and don’t feel equipped that’s okay. The first step is to acknowledge your disobedience in this area of your life, “Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.” Psalms 51:9-13 NIV. The next step is community; find a group of believers that are actively sharing their faith and become a part of their group. They will encourage you, train you and provide you with resources so that you are not doing this all by yourself, then you will be able to teach transgressors God’s ways so that sinners turn back to him.
Prayer – Lord, I pray for every believer to learn how to engage in spiritual conversations with people so that they can experience the joy of full obedience and witness others coming to faith. Amen.
