Scripture – “In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.””

‭‭Acts‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – One group was upset with another group because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. The disciples understood this was a problem but to take care of it they would have had to neglect their calling, which was the ministry of God’s word. Instead of saying, “that’s not our problem, figure it out yourselves” they chose wisely men to be in charge of this duty and gave their full attention to prayer and the ministry of God’s word.

Application – Every role in life has a small number of high-return activities that determine effectiveness and success. At the same time, there are many necessary tasks that must be done but do not require our specific gifting, training, or calling. When we spend too much time “waiting on tables,” we often do so at the expense of what God has uniquely equipped us to do.

This passage challenges us to examine where we may be neglecting our primary responsibilities by trying to do everything ourselves. The solution is not apathy or avoidance, nor is it prideful self-reliance. Instead, we are called to delegate wisely, entrusting responsibility to capable and faithful people, so that we can remain focused on what matters most. Ask yourself: what am I doing that someone else could do well, and what am I neglecting because of it?

Prayer – Lord, give me wisdom to discern what you have truly called me to do. Help me to be humble enough to delegate, trusting others rather than trying to carry every responsibility myself. Show me where I am distracted by lesser tasks and guide me back to what you want me to do and what I have promised to do.
