Scripture “Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.””
Luke 2:28-32 NIV
Observation – Simeon was an old man who loved God deeply. God had promised him that he would not die until he had seen the Savior of the world. In this moment, Simeon holds the infant Jesus and praises God for keeping His promise. He boldly proclaims that Jesus is not only Israel’s hope, but salvation for all people.
Application – The Bible contains astonishing claims like this one. Imagine visiting a friend a week after they had their first child, and a neighbor suddenly picked up the baby and declared, “Sovereign Lord… my eyes have seen your salvation.” You would likely think something was very wrong. Yet this is exactly what Simeon does—and Scripture presents it as truth. We should be careful not to skim past verses that clearly declare Jesus as Savior and the source of eternal life. When we read the Bible as a whole, we begin to see that it all points to Jesus—who He is, what He came to do, and how He demonstrated God’s love for us.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, don’t let us overlook miraculous passages because they are so familiar. Let us meditate on them and carry them with us through our days so that we are filled with hope and gratitude. Amen.
