Scripture – “Stern discipline awaits anyone who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die. Folly brings joy to one who has no sense, but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course.”
Proverbs 15:10, 21 NIV
Observation – God has provided us with commands and a code of conduct by which we must live in order to have a good life. He has provided us with a good path to walk down, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalms 119:105 NIV. He has done this because he cares for us and wants us to be successful and avoid pain and regret.
Application – By nature we don’t want to take the straight safe way. Every SUV commercial is a hard right turn off the highway onto some uncharted road to an unknown destination. It looks exhilarating and we identify with blazing our own path. That isn’t what God is talking about here. God gives us freedom and a wide lane to drive on throughout our lives but there are solid yellow lines we can’t cross, when we do act foolishly, ignoring God’s warning signs, we face stern discipline. Whoever has understanding keeps a straight course. This understanding is found in God’s word and it is good for you because God cares for you.
Prayer – Lord, give us a desire to walk on your path so we can enjoy peace and purpose in this life and avoid folly and the discipline that follows bad decisions.
