Scripture – “Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.”
Mark 6:45-52 NIV
Observation – After witnessing Jesus multiply the fish and loaves the disciples get in a boat while Jesus goes to a mountainside to pray. Afterwards he walks on water, and as he is about to pass them, the disciples cry out because they think he is a ghost. Jesus gets in the boat, calms the wind and waves and then the Bible says, “They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.”
Application – We are exactly the same as the disciples. We have seen Jesus do many incredible things in our lives but when he answers a prayer for us we are amazed. We shouldn’t be, that is what he does. We should be overcome with gratitude and we should praise him for it but we shouldn’t be completely amazed. The Bible says the disciples were completely amazed because they didn’t understand what happened with the loaves because their hearts were hardened. Our hearts are hard when we think that Jesus can’t or won’t answer our prayers or perform miracles for us even though the Bible says to ask, seek and knock because God gives good gifts to his children.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, help our unbelief!
