Scripture – “He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.””
Mark 4:26-29 NIV
Observation – When we share the gospel, or do something in Christ’s name for someone, God works in that person’s heart. Just as the the growth of a plant is imperceptible so is the work of God in people’s lives. There appears to be nothing happening beneath the surface and then we see the promise of something new happening.
Application – When God directs us to tell someone the truth or do anything for him remember this is the kingdom of God at work. I walk my dog everyday and from time to time I will see a neighbor who has roped off their yard and planted new grass. For weeks it is just mud and then the yard looks green from a distance. When you get close the grass has just begun to sprout. After two months it looks like a mature yard. It would still be a dirt patch had my neighbors not planted the seed.
Prayer – Lord, when you ask us to plant a seed don’t let us get discouraged when we don’t see growth. There may be something happening beneath the surface. Amen.
