Scripture – “Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Jesus is explaining the parable of the four soils and is describing a person who hears his word but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desire for other things come in and choke out what Jesus wants to do through and in a person’s life.

Application – When I read this passage about seed sown among the thorns and compare it to seed sown on good soil I feel like I spend most of my life in the thorns and then every once in awhile take a vacation to the land of the good soil. This is a place where the Holy Spirit reigns in your heart, you obey God and are filled with joy and peace. If our lives are consumed with results in the earthly realm and our focus is on the here and now we’ll be resigned to living among the thorns. When we lift our eyes to heaven and think about the day of our death and what we want to be true about our lives when we are old and our strength is gone we will put our time, energy and resources towards storing up treasures in heaven.

Prayer – Lord, don’t let us get away with living among the thorns. Give us your strength to rise above the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desire or other things and to trust you, embrace your provision and pursue your kingdom and your righteousness. Amen.
