Scripture – “Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked.”
Proverbs 25:26 NIV
Observation – When a good person succumbs to an evil person it is like throwing dirt in clean water or tainting your well.
Application – No one would ever think of contaminating their water source. They understand that clean water is vital to their well being and water that has been exposed to harmful elements is a threat to their family’s lives. God says that when a righteous man gives way, when they make a choice to compromise what they know is right, they pollute their lives. They have committed two sins, as God says through Jeremiah, ““My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah 2:13. The first sin is you have replaced trust in God with trust in yourself, that you know what is better to do than God does in this situation. The second sin you have committed is the actual sin, whatever it is that you did. This is true every time. When we sin we first forsake God and then commit the sin. In this particular verse it is because we feel pressure from another person. Fear of man will prove to be a snare but whoever trusts in the Lord will be kept safe.
Prayer – Lord, you want us to know the truth so that the truth can set us free. I pray that every one of your children would fear and trust you and not succumb to the wicked.
