Scripture – “And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
John 5:37-40 NIV
Observation – Jesus is talking to Jewish leaders and tells them that the Scriptures they read every day testify about him, he tells them directly that they need to come to him for eternal life yet they refuse to come.
Application – Jesus is the only way to heaven. Some will say that is unfair, there should be many paths. As long as you are a good person you should go to heaven. As long as you have faith in something that should be good enough for God. They go on to say that all religions basically teach the same thing, so why Jesus? We were created by God for God, that is the reason for our existence. During our time on earth God allows us to do a lot of great things and also encounter many trials that cause us pain. While we navigate this life the ultimate goal is to enter into a personal relationship with our creator. That is the purpose. Refusing to come to Jesus for eternal life results in judgement and eternal separation from God. What is it about Jesus that you disdain that you wouldn’t give your life to him?
Prayer – Dear Jesus, thank you for coming and dying for us so that we could be forgiven and know you. I pray for those who diligently study the Scriptures but have yet to humble themselves and ask for your mercy in their lives.
