Scripture- “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭28‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – If a city’s walls were broken down anyone who wanted to leave could leave and anyone who wanted to enter could enter. When you left the city you were alone and vulnerable to being attacked and if an enemy wanted to enter, it was easy because there wasn’t a wall to stop them. A person who lacks self-control has no self-imposed restrictions on their life, they do things that are bad for them and, because they have no discernment, they allow people in their lives that bring them harm. In short order, their lives are a mess.

Application – If you are a person that struggles with self-discipline you need to sit down and really think about who you want to be. We ask children, high school graduates and college graduates, “what do you want to do?” or “what do you want to be?” The more profound question is, “who do you want to be?” Do you want to be a person that chases everything that promises to be fun and exciting or things that bring temporary relief but long term pain or do you want to be the kind of person that gives thought to their ways so that they choose carefully what they say yes to and what they say know to? In order to have a good life you need to have walls in place that protect you.

Prayer – Lord, I pray for those that desire to please you but have no self-control. I pray that they would surrender to you and ask you for help. I pray they build walls in their lives so they can be the person you designed them to be for your kingdom.
