Scripture – “Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.””
Luke 22:39-40 NIV
Observation – Jesus knew he was going to be betrayed, arrested, tried, beaten and go to his death on the cross to pay for humanity’s sins. He told his disciples to pray so that they would not fall into temptation. The temptation Jesus was referring to was the temptation to abandon the one that had loved and cared for them for the past three years. To turn their back on the one that had healed the sick and raised people from the dead.
Application – We should be praying the same prayer for our lives. It is easy to follow Jesus when the blessings abound. God is so good to us that we can start to think that life is all about being the child of a generous and loving father. Jesus warns us that in this world we will have trouble but to take heart because he has overcome the world. Pray that you will not fall into temptation to abandon the one that gave his life for you and promises to come back and bring you to where he is now.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, you are our shield and our very great reward. Strengthen us with your strength so that we do not fall into temptation when we feel threatened because of our faith in you.
